Construction of The Brighton i360 commenced at the beginning of June with the first of several Barges arriving at Brighton Beach from Holland delivering the steel cans which would form the tallest new UK visitor attraction outside London.
The Brighton i360 will be the World’s first cable car & one of the UK’s tallest visitor attractions standing at a colossal height of 162 metres. It has been designed by the London Eye Architects and is being constructed by an International team, bringing together specialist design and engineering from the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and the UK.
At the beginning of May, when Powerhire were asked to get involved with the provision of temporary generator power to support the construction works, our Technical Sales Manager was only too pleased to meet up with one of the construction team’s Directors to discuss their temporary generator requirements.
The build is fascinating, and has become a major visitor attraction in Brighton, with 17 specially fitted-out steel cans, each measuring between 6 and 12 metres, which are being joined together, using a giant jacking tower, to build the shaft which will carry a futuristic viewing pod enabling 200 visitors to enjoy a new perspective on the fun loving seaside city of Brighton. Seven thousand tonnes of gravel, shingle and chalk have been moved to create a platform, whilst a 4,000 tonne concrete foundation has been built under the ground to balance out the towering feat of engineering.
The temporary generator requirements were extremely straight forward for the necessary power to site, which was for heavy duty construction tools, transformers and construction machinery. Our Technical Sales Manager recommended 2 temporary generators set up with one running and one on standby, which our Rental Team delivered to site at the beginning of June and connected up and commissioned for the 20 week construction schedule as requested.
So far, due to fabulous weather conditions the build has been progressing at an outstanding rate and updates are given on their website.
The tower will be completed this summer and is due to open in the summer of 2016, when the futuristic glass viewing pod has been built and added to the tower which will glide visitors slowly up to 450 feet to enjoy breath taking 3600 views of Brighton. At the foot of the tower a visitor centre will complete the structure, to incorporate a 400 seat restaurant; a shop; children’s play zone; exhibition space; tea rooms; and conference and event facilities.
