Rental power for Grenfell Community Project
In April 2018 our technical sales manager received a telephone call from his long standing customer, one of London’s leading property developers asking if Powerhire would volunteer their services to support them with back-up power for a project for the Grenfell community.
The customer, who would be acting as main contractor for the scheme, explained that the project was being undertaken by The BBC and their flagship renovation team DIYSOS to build a community hub and rebuild The Dale Youth Boxing Gym that was once located at the foot of Grenfell Tower. The Dale Youth Boxing Club has been credited with turning around the lives of many young people, as well as turning out Olympic gold medal winner James DeGale, current world champion George Groves and nurturing 200 Amateur Boxing Association champions since it was founded 60 years ago and had been based in the first floor of the Grenfell Tower since 1999. Since the fire at the Grenfell Tower the boxing gym has been located in a car park.
As you can imagine, we jumped at the chance to be involved such an amazing project.
After several telephone conversations with the customer and a visit to the planned build site it was determined that a 60kVA road-tow generator was best due to the restricted space around the site. The planned build area was to be a disused site under the A40 Westway, a five-minute walk north of the Grenfell Tower.
On the agreed delivery date, our HiAb driver delivered the road-tow generator to the planned build site in West London ready for installation to power up the site for the volunteer trades that will be helping out over the following 2 months.
Prior to and during the build the DIYSOS team worked closely with the local residents and the charity that own the land where the build was to take place and who will help manage the new buildings going forward.
The Powerhire team were lucky enough to visit the site during the build and met with some of the amazing DIYSOS team who were very appreciative of us giving our generator for free! Unfortunately we were a day late to meet The Duke of Cambridge!!
Our customer, the DIYSOS team, volunteers, trades and suppliers from all over dedicated their time and worked tirelessly to achieve this build within the tight time frame set with the site being handed over to the community at the end of May.
Powerhire are so proud to have been involved in such an amazing project and honoured to be able to make our small contribution towards this huge project, the amazing volunteers and to the community of Grenfell.
We would like to thank our customer for this opportunity and we hope these new buildings will bring enjoyment to the Grenfell community for many years to come.
UPDATE ON COMMUNITY HUB
“We have had lots of people asking us how the community space at Bay 20 will be run. This is very important as the buildings (the community space and the boxing club) have been constructed free of charge through donations from a huge range of companies and by volunteers carrying out the work on site. These companies and volunteers have become involved to provide the community with space that is accessible and affordable. The community space has been designed to have a variety of flexible spaces, which will enable a wide range of uses.
Dale Youth Boxing Club will receive an initial 25-year lease on their building from the Westway Trust. The Trust will appoint a community operator to manage the community space which includes a community café.
A community steering group will be set up to support the operator and to monitor usage of the space to ensure it is accessible and affordable to the whole community. The community steering group will be chosen by an independent panel and will be involved in selecting the community operator. The Westway Trust has pledged that both buildings will be for community-use for their entire lifetime and will provide financial support to the community space operator to ensure its long term viability”.
