Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, being held at the All England Club in London since 1877 & is widely considered the most prestigious. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments and is the only one still played on grass.
As well as still being played on grass The Wimbledon Championships is steeped in other traditions including a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators and boasts Royal patronage.
The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Final, scheduled always for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively. It is one of the most notoriously watched sporting events and is televised on over 40 International Networks, being the largest annual broadcast operation in the World.
Nine courts had live television coverage, more than any other Grand Slam, and more than 80 broadcast organisations were on site. With approximately 2500 broadcasters working in the Broadcast Centre & host broadcaster BBC using nearly 100 cameras around the grounds for the World to view, back-up Power at The Wimbledon Championships is vital.
Having provided the required rental generators for the tournament on previous occasions, Powerhire were once again delighted to be contacted by the Chief Electrical Engineer of a Sporting Events Company for the provision of rental power for the 2015 Championships. Even though Powerhire Engineers knew the complex well we still visited site to be sure that the most suitable rental generators were specified together with confirming the most efficient arrangement for their location.
As well as supporting the outside & onsite broadcasting with standby rental generators we also supplied an additional rental generator together with fuel tank, distribution & power cabling to the main car park to power lighting towers and all the security x-ray machinery used before entry to the courts.
Four days prior to the commencement of The Championships all rental generators & associated equipment were transported to site by our Logistics Team and our Installation Team, who were able to utilise an onsite tractor unit, positioned and connected up the rental power before commissioning it and leaving site.
